DIY Organization Hack: Storage Drawers Redo

Organization isn’t always fun, but when you add some color and cute labels with this fun DIY organization hack – organizing your stuff isn’t such a chore!

Hi all! I think I’ve mentioned just a few times that I’m in the middle of a major overhaul of my house. Rooms are being moved around. Craft stuff is being arranged. Nurseries are being created. It’s craziness. Part of all this craziness is trying to make sense of all the DIY stuff/craft supplies that had been haphazardly thrown into the old craft room, which must now all be moved to a new craft room. And of course, I want it to all be carefully organized in a neat, yet cute, way. So I decided to add a little craftiness to my organization with this DIY organization hack.

With this quick and easy DIY organization hack, I decided to bring in my DIY flair and add a little color to these bland storage drawers that I bought to help with my organizing. This isn’t a great picture, but you can see that the storage drawers were all white and clear to begin with.

There was nothing wrong with the drawer tower, per se. As you can see below, it’s great for holding your scarves, fedoras, etc. I just didn’t want everything to be plain white in my new DIY project/craft room. Adding color always makes things more fun right? And who can pass up such a quick DIY project anyway?

So, I bought some yellow spray paint (of course, because I love spray paint) and these Martha Stewart adhesive metal bookplates. I know I probably could have found other bookplates for a lot cheaper if they didn’t carry the Martha Stewart brand name, but the adhesiveness was just so darn convenient! (Pretty much what makes this a DIY organization hack, too – fast is what we aim for!)

I took out the storage drawers and painted the frame and bookplates separately. If you want to try this yourself, I would suggest NOT sanding the plastic storage drawers frame before painting. Usually I’m a huge proponent of sanding everything before painting when I’m doing any DIY project in order to make the paint really stick. But with the plastic, a lot of scratches showed up and they were very visible, even with just a light sanding.

I think the spray paint will stick fine on its own, just make sure the spray paint is made for plastic surfaces. Once you finish painting, let the paint dry at least an hour and apply a second coat if necessary. Let the frame and bookplates dry at least 24 hours before you actually use it for storage. And enjoy your new fun and colorful storage drawers! (I know I will.)

Following a total hip replacement my craft room is now residing downstairs. Your posting is a great help to me as I am reorganising the room and every hint helps.
Your storage drawers are a lovely colour.
    Thank you for useful hints.

Just moved and despite the fact that I eliminated a LOT of stuff, I don’t have enough room in my new kitchen for everything. In the more than the two months I’ve been here, I’ve not found a solution. I want my kitchen neat but right now it is anything but. I already have a plastic drawer set that I can use and I will get others. Thanks for the project.
