DIY Duck Mosaic Craft

duck-craft-ideaYou may or may not have noticed that I didn’t post anything for Father’s Day. Which doesn’t mean I forgot the holiday, it just means I was er… running a little behind. I actually did spend the day before Father’s Day with my dad. It was the day I went to the fair and won the Pillsbury Pie Championship with  my chicken and mushroom pie. It was really cool to be able to share the win with my dad that day, and hopefully it made up for the fact that his present was about two weeks late, haha.

A couple of months ago I asked my dad what his favorite craft on my website was, and he said it was my owl mosaic. I think it’s mainly his favorite because it was one of the very first crafts I put on my website, and it’s kind of what got me started with my blog. But I also hope it’s because it’s a pretty cool little concept. Basically I took a bunch of little foam counting blocks from the dollar store, painted them, and then made them into a mosaic.

So I took the idea and applied it to something my dad likes. See, I like owls and my dad likes ducks! Like father, like daughter?

First I drew out a grid on a piece of cardboard and drew the outline of the duck.

Next came the tedious fun part! I cut the blocks to fit within the duck outline and for the water and then I painted each block to match the spot it would be going in. Last time, with the owl mosaic I spray painted the foam blocks. However, this was a pretty long and time consuming process. Imagine spray painting one side of a bunch of blocks, waiting an hour, turning them all over, spray painting them again, and then repeating that process three more times! Yeah, I wasn’t doing that again.

This time I painted the foam blocks using acrylic paint and it worked out pretty well. The drying time was much faster, and it was easier to change the colors of the blocks if necessary. Sadly, I went to the dollar store and found out they were no longer selling the foam blocks that I used (thank goodness I had a bunch left over from the owl mosaic), so I’m not sure if I’m ever going to do this sort of mosaic craft again. However, I’m really pleased with how the duck craft turned out. I finished it off with a frame and a button for the eye and I FINALLY gave it to my dad two Sundays after Father’s Day. Better late than never, right?

    Ducks have always had a fond place in my life. As a boy, watching and listening to them was just plane fun. Come on, the way they waddle, those broad flat feet, and the perfectly timed “quacks,” what’s not to like? Certainly, having visions of Donald and Daffy, two of my all time favorite cartoon characters, whenever a duck came into sight, always prepared me for an uplifting visit.

    When my daughters were little people, we needed an explanation for the occasional body sound that was sometimes accompanied by a less than friendly fragrance. All the descriptive words that were used seemed down right rude. Whenever we heard a sound, I’d look all around and then at my wife and girls, and comment: “Did anyone hear those ducks?” Sometimes, I’d point to a flock that was only faintly visible off in the distance, and ask: “Do you see them way over there?” It wasn’t long before it became the accustomed way we referred to those little noises that visit from time to time.

    A young woman gave me the most beautiful duck a few weeks after fathers day. He’s two shades of brown with a green head, a bright orange beak, and a ring of yellow around his neck. He’s swimming on a blue, blue pond, and his round black eyes suggest he’s really focused on something. Perhaps he dreams of the time when he will be home again. The fact that he’s made of little wedge shaped forms, enclosed in a sixteen by twenty inch frame, doesn’t make me think any less of him. He will always remain precious to me because my little girl gave him to me.
