Remember the 80s and 90s when everybody had fabulous puffy-painted t-shirts, sweaters, shoes, etc.? These girls do:
Well, making your own shirts is coming back in a big way. More and more people are using classic fabric painting techniques to decorate their own clothing and other fabric items – including me! Totally Tulip® was kind enough to send me some of their Tulip® Soft® Fabric Paint, Tulip® Dimensional Fabric Paints, and stencils, and I had sooooo much fun using them.
For my first project (that’s right, I said first), I decided to go with two things I love – purple and chevron. I grabbed a cotton sweatshirt with a slight sparkly sheen to it (okay, let’s add sparkly to the things I love and make it three).
I took regular painter’s tape and blocked off a simple chevron print.
Next, I put a newspaper inside the sweatshirt (so the paint on the front of the shirt doesn’t soak through to the back) and got to work. I used Tulip® Soft® Fabric Paint in Grape along with a sponge brush to paint between the tape.
I was originally going to make the purple chevron the base for my “crafty shirt,” but I was so in love with how the purple chevrons turned out, I decided to just leave them as is. And here is the final result:
So…I really wanted a crafty shirt though. So I grabbed another cotton sweatshirt, grabbed my Tulip® paints and got down to business!
For this one I used the Tulip® Soft® Fabric Paint in white to set down a base. I then used a splatter technique to get some crafty looking paint splatters on top of the base coat.
I then had some fun with the Tulip® Dimensional Fabric Paints (or “Puffy Paints” as most people call them). I used purple for the little letters and turquoise for the outline of the big letters. I then made polka dots on the big letters using purple, yellow, pink, and lime. And, drum roll please…here is my crafty shirt.
Woot woot. I’m totally going to have some crafting events with friends just so I can wear this shirt now! And I will definitely be making some more crafty shirts in the future.
