What do you do when you need some inspiration for crafting? Make an inspirational craft! I really wish this had been the first post of my blog, but second is almost as good, right? I’ve been really wanting to make some melted crayon art, and I also wanted some art to put in my craft room, so I decided to combine the two.
I took an old screen print from Target that I wasn’t too fond of anymore and painted over the canvas with white acrylic paint. I then hot glued crayons to the top following the ROYGBIV model. If I ever did this again I might experiment with mixing the colors up or doing only a few different colors, but to start with I wanted to keep it simple.
Next is the “fun” part. And by fun, I mean the incredibly tedious, sort of painful part. I used my hair dryer to melt the crayons, but if I ever do this again or go into the melted crayon painting business, I would probably look into getting a heat gun.
As you can see, the wax tends to blow all over the place and splatters too. I got quite a bit of melted wax on my hands and the carpet. So if you do this with a hair dryer, I would suggest melting the top of the crayons and keeping the hair dryer pointed directly down (don’t blow at an angle). I’ve also seen people put crayons in their hot glue guns, so if you wanted to keep the crayons looking as nice and pristine as the above picture, you could maybe go that route too.
I bought the “create” wooden word at Michael’s and painted it and glued it on prior to the crayon melting. Wax got all over the word, so I ended up re-painting it. I thought the wax would pool around the word and look cool, but that didn’t really work out, so I might glue it on after the melting next time.
However, all that being said. I really like how the melted crayon art turned out. It’s already up in my craft room and I’m very inspired to create even more arts and crafts!
